Five Fundamentals of Fat Loss

Last week I wrote about adding or increasing fish oil as part of your regular diet. How are you going with it?

I’m still consistent with my 15g or 15 capsules a day. In fact I needed to re-stock during the week and picked up 500g for 32 bucks. I’m taking Salmon oil, but they had fish oil cheaper still at about 20 bucks.

And I still hear people comment that supplements are too expensive, but even at my 15g a day I’m paying about a dollar a day. A tub of ice cream or a cheap pizza costs the same, two things I enjoy.

If I’m taking fish oil, I don’t crave junk food as much so it actually works out financially neutral, plus I get the health benefits!

Below is the new Bootcamp video featuring my Mum and trainer Shaun. If you watch Shaun carefully you’ll notice that he is absolutely exhausted, and it’s only the second round! Strangely my Mum didn’t pull up that sore. I was surprised and impressed and even a little bit disappointed.

Now here’s the end part of an interview that John Berardi from Precision Nutrition did recently with the Crossfit Journal. It’s his Five Fundamentals of Fat Loss to look better naked condensed it into 5 paragraphs. There’s no way I could have said it better, so I’ll leave it to John.

“Looking good naked doesn’t need to be as complicated as everyone makes it out to be. In fact, there are probably only five important things you need to think about. And everything else? They’re just distractions.

First, to lose fat, you have to gradually decrease your calories. In other words, you have to start eating less.

Second, to support your muscle tissue, you have to gradually increase your protein. In other words, eat more lean meat, chicken, fish, or whatever lean vegetarian source you choose. These foods help speed up your metabolism, help you feel full, and provide important amino acids.

Third, to create the right environment for fat loss, you need to gradually decrease your carbs. In other words, eat less sugar and starches – like processed gains. Eating too much of these foods can wreak havoc on your bloodstream, increasing hormones that lead to fat gain.

Fourth, to make sure you’re healthy throughout the process, you need to gradually increase the amount of veggies you eat. You can think of it this way: start replacing your grains with greens. If you do this, you’ll be getting more fibre, vitamins, and minerals.

And fifth, to support your metabolism, you need to gradually replace your bad fats with healthy ones. By adding things like olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fish oils, you’ll speed your metabolism and lose more fat than ever.

That’s really it. If you do those things consistently, along with a solid training program, looking better naked is a pretty simple process.”
